The center examines the differences and shared characteristics of Canada, Mexico, and the United States; compares the North American experiment with Europe's; and challenges students and faculty to imagine a continental future.

The Center for Latin American Studies at San Diego State University is a U.S. Department of Education designated National Resource Center. The Center offers multidisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in Latin American studies. In addition, it supports research, community outreach, conferences, study abroad, and other activities dedicated to teaching students, working professionals, and community members about Latin American economies, history, society, culture, and languages.

The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. The Chicana and Chicano studies degree provides the student with a timely, interdisciplinary education regarding the nation's fast-growing ethnic group, the Chicano/Latino, and the interplay of culture, politics, economics and society in the dynamic United States-Mexican border region. The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies also endeavors to contribute to the development of knowledge about the Chicano/Latino populations and the border region through original scholarship on the part of its faculty and students. The department recognizes women and gender based issues as integral to a Chicano studies program.

The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies also offers a minor in Chicana and Chicano Studies as well as a comprehensive United States-Mexican Border Studies Minor and Certificate program.

The mission of the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, UCSD is to be the premier institute for social science research on Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations. The Center supports research relevant to current policy issues in Mexico and to the binational relationship in close collaboration with social scientists at Mexican institutions. In addition, most of the Center's research involves comparative studies with a substantial Mexico component.

The Center is directed by Professor Christopher Woodruff, an international/development economist based at UCSD's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. Professor Woodruff is an expert on the impact of weak legal systems and financial markets on the growth of small and medium-sized firms in developing and transitional economies.

The Trans-Border Institute (TBI) was created in 1994 with two main objectives: 1) to promote border-related scholarship, activities and community at the University of San Diego, and 2) to promote an active role for the University in the cross-border community. To realize these objectives, the Institute engages in a variety of programmatic activities and initiatives.

The Trans-Border Institute provides information about and supports University of San Diego initiatives related to the U.S.- Mexican border in four key areas:

El objetivo del CISAN es producir investigación multi e interdisciplinaria para contribuir al conocimiento de Estados Unidos y Canadá, y la relación de ambos con México, así como fomentar el estudio riguroso de los mismos a través de diversos enfoques que permitan una mejor comprensión de los distintos aspectos de la compleja realidad norteamericana.

El CISAN busca promover el conocimiento objetivo y plural sobre la región mediante una amplia labor de difusión y extensión universitaria, así como enriquecer las actividades docentes en los distintos programas de licenciatura y posgrado afines a nuestro campo de estudios.

De manera permanente, nuestro Centro reúne un sólido acervo documental y bibliográfico especializado, que constantemente se actualiza, y es accesible a investigadores y estudiantes.
